I remember when I first got my Powerbook, and two guys from #mortalkombat (Agilo and Garret, specifically) asked me if I was going to put Linux on it. My response was, "Why? OS X does everything I need Linux to do."

Garret replied, "But... Linux on a Powerbook is sexy. :("

I then told him how I looked at it: the difference between Mac OS X and Linux on a Powerbook is like the difference between Charlize Theron as a supermodel and in the movie Monster. They're both fundamentally the same entity, but one is a hell of a lot easier on the eyes. ;-)

For the record, I consider Mac OS X to be a much better desktop UNIX than Linux. If you use Linux and love it as a desktop, great. More power to you. I'm a longtime Linux admin, and even I get pissed off getting Linux to do what I want to do on the desktop. Mac OS X is FAR more hassle-free, and it Just Works(tm).

Goddamnit!

I had a long post and I didn't realize I wasn't logged in.

(*#*&^*&$^*(@(*#& ... I wish LJ would get their fricking act together.

(You'll all see it when Jenn unscreens it.)

At least I'm relieved to know I'm not the only one having problems staying logged in. IE forgets the second I leave the login page - I've deleted cookies and everything. I have to use Netscape to make any entries. Blah.

I know... it's weird. In my case it's Safari that has issues; Firefox on my Windows PC at home hasn't had these issues yet.

I logged in with Safari (2.0.3) just fine this morning, and the long-in is holding without trouble.

I find it MUCH more useful than my time on Fedora Core 4. FC4 was nice, but incredibly hard to DO anything in. OSX has the customizability of Unix, but with the reliability of Macintosh. Basically - It Just Works (tm). ;)

This is exactly how I've described using OS X. It does what I want it to do -- and if I really wanna work it, well, there's always Terminal.

(Which reminds me, I really ned to finish reading this e-book I have on UNIX on Mac OSX.)

Cheers,
Gwen Smith

I'm not confident I could get x86 MacOS to do well on this 5+ year old notebook I'm using, so I'll continue to settle for Kubuntu. That said, Kubuntu is easily the best experience I've had with any distribution of Linux. Even better than Libranet 2.8.1 (Current Libranet is 3.0 and completely unavailable at any price right now -- and may never be available for purchase again, sadly).

SL, who needs to either get some of his health back so he can use a desktop more often or a nice K8 based notebook to run 64 bit Kubuntu on
